Biography
I grew up in California playing soccer and riding BMX, always active and never giving much thought to the gym. By my teens I was already dealing with chronic back pain. In my 20s, after too many BMX injuries, I had to stop riding. Between work, school, and running a business I became more sedentary. I was working 60+ hours a week, under a lot of stress and struggling with sciatica and chronic back pain. I started to question a lot of the lifestyle norms of the status quo.
In 2018, I went to Maui for what was supposed to be a one-month farm stay that ended up being three years. During that time, I did manual labor, lived in minimal conditions and dealt with migraines and recurring back issues that sometimes left me immobilized for days. I dabbled in basic yoga poses, massage, and chiropractic care but nothing brought lasting relief. For a decade I lived in cycles of pain and confusion, skeptical of traditional approaches like weightlifting or pushing deep stretches that I intuited would only make my situation worse.
In 2021, I came across Functional Patterns. The focus on biomechanics and human movement immediately made sense to me and my situation. I started the 10-week online course and when I moved to San Diego I found a facility to train at in person. Over the course of a year, my posture improved, my movement got more athletic and the pain I was dealing with finally began to resolve. Just as importantly, I gained mental clarity, confidence and became more emotionally grounded.
To continue growing and to help others, I chose to get my Human Foundations certification and committed to Functional Patterns principles. This is more than a training system, it’s a framework for lifelong growth both physically and mentally. I believe improving the world begins by improving ourselves.
